BENEFITING: GIRLS TALK GUYS TALK INC
"People who have a stake in their society, protect that society, but when they don't have it, they unconsciously want to destroy it." —Martin Luther King Jr.
The GirlsTalk/GuysTalk program was designed to encourage students, 11-21, over the course of the school year, to have a stake in THEMSELVES. Youth participate in various workshops and activities that teach about social awareness, health consciousness, healthy relationships, and positive self-esteem. It is the goal of the GirlsTalk/GuysTalk program to teach students they have choices and to help cultivate well-rounded, confident young men and women who will choose to invest in themselves and protect their stake, while making positive contributions in their communities.
We have to re-structure how we work with youth in this country. They have voices that need to be heard and it is our responsibility to listen to them, provide resources and expose them to as many opportunities as possible. That is our responsibility as ‘the village.’ Our kids are stifled amidst rigid disciplinary tactics and pointless testing - it is impossible to flourish in that kind of environment.
What if we teach our kids to think outside the box, to believe in themselves, to invest in themselves, to love themselves?
According to youth.gov, positive youth development programs engage young people in intentional, productive, and constructive ways, while recognizing and enhancing their strengths. These programs promote positive outcomes by providing opportunities, fostering positive relationships, and giving needed support. THIS IS GIRLSTALK/GUYSTALK.
Our partnerships include Planned Parenthood, TADA! Youth Theater, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, Amnesty International, LandYoga and more. With little to no financial support, we have managed to study yoga, attend dance and theater performances, secure scholarships, make poetry books and jewelry, feature guest speakers and go on trips. But we need help to grow. We need our community to support us and spread the word. We need YOU!
We are hoping to raise $15,000 for 2016. Please see our breakdown for the funds raised, below. We are a non-profit. All donations are tax deductible.
$10,000 will fund 100 workshops (ex. Know Your Rights & The Police, Body Image, Nutrition & Physical Education, Environmental Health, Sexual Health...) throughout the year for 1500 young people, in need.
$3,000 for yoga, meditation & mindfulness workshops at LANDYOGA in Harlem (will support 20 weeks of yoga for students)
