Talented music students from Turkey have an invaluable opportunity to study in the United States with scholarships provided by The American Turkish Society. The Society’s Ahmet Ertegun Memorial Scholarship supports Turkish musicians in their studies at The Juilliard School in New York City. Since 2007, four talented Turkish students have successfully completed their graduate studies in music at Juilliard with the help of this scholarship, which provides meaningful tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, founder of Atlantic Records, and long-time Chairman of The Society.
The Society’s Arif Mardin Music Fellowship funds the participation of young Turkish musicians in a five-week performance program at Berklee College of Music in Boston. To date, seven gifted students have completed the program with this memorial scholarship, which pays tribute to the late Arif Mardin, world-renowned producer/composer and Vice Chairman of The Society for many years. Our most recent Arif Mardin Fellow reflected on his summer experience saying, “I didn’t expect that I was going to learn this much. I think, in terms of musical improvement, I am at least one year ahead compared to what I could have learned on my own if I hadn't attended the program. […] Now my only dream is to study at Berklee full time after I graduate from high school.”
