Multiple deployments have a profound effect upon members of the armed forces and their families. This is evidenced by increased instances of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), swelling suicide rates, and rising domestic and substance abuse among our service members. Consequently, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 25% of soldiers suffer from PTSD. Simultaneously, veterans currently represent 25% of the homeless population, 21% of the unemployed, and 20% of U.S. suicides. Despite these staggering statistics, realistic approaches toward mitigating the long-term costs of war upon our nation and soldiers remain elusive and ambiguous. Inspired by our wounded warriors, I created and launched The Frontlines website. The Frontlines provides members of the armed forces, veterans, family and friends a multi-faceted platform for creatively sharing their stories of service in any branch of the armed forces, to include the Coast Guard and National Guard. The website allows the storyteller to create a written account of their experience and to include video, audio, photos, or art they may have. The purpose of the storytelling is to:
a) Document a personal account of a particular combat experience
b) Provide a safe and supportive arena in which to share such a story
c) Develop a sense of community to overcome what, for many veterans, is a lonely experience
Storytelling heals the soul, is universal, and transcends all cultures, beliefs and nations. The website is built, and now is time for its use and unleashing the healing power of storytelling. 100% of your contributions will go to the production of 100 posters, and one year of online promotion on Facebook. The posters will be placed in Green Beans Coffee stores overseas on U.S. bases; in conjunction with online promotion to the 24 million living veterans, and 76 million descendants of veterans, your donations will enhance our ability to reach service members and their families. As our nation continues its combat operations overseas the long-term costs of caring for Veterans will continue to escalate, but our moral responsibility to care for our veterans will not vanish.
Very respectfully,
Nathan W. Tierney
