Surf and Jerk Documentary
Organized by: Catherine Levesque
I am going to Boston Bay Jamaica for a couples of weeks at the end of february 2016. I will be producing a documentary about Jamaicain surfers and the local Boston Bay community. A beach internationally known as the birthplace of Jerk food.
This documentary will be about the subculture reality of the surfers, jerk vendors, locals and their daily struggle to survive and make a living in this small community where a cultural clash exists between tourists and Jamaicain reality. I am producing this documentary with my own camera, laptop and multimedia skills. I want the local people to participate in this creative project. I want to be able to help them out by teaching them about multimedia, marketing and promoting skills. I want to involve them in this project and give them a chance to express themselves and increase awareness of the tourists by letting the people know about this amazing place and what it has to offer.
Surfing is a big part of Boston Bay community and has helped a lot of youth to stay away from violence, hopelessness and frustrations. In a country where the minimum wage is about 2$ an hour or about 50-80$ per week. Anybody can understand that it is very difficult to survive.
The surfing equipment is mainly outdated and broken but they are very determined to keep their sport alive despite their limited ressources. They need new boards and gears. Most tourists dont even know about surfing in Jamaica, surfing lessons or equipment rentals because there is not much marketing or even a sign on the surf shack on the beach.
Without your help I cannot do it. I will give them money allowance for participating and completing the project. I want to organize a day event in the community where kids will be able to come and receive free lessons by local instructors and play in a safe environment. The money will also help pay for expenses in the pre-post production of the documentary.
Please show support to this friendly, laid back Jamaicain community. I am showing you my gratitude in advance for believing and investing in my creative project. Together we can empower, lead and give hope to people who are less fortunate. A small donation can go a long way.
