BENEFITING: SURFING THE NATIONS FOUNDATION
HOURS PLEDGED: 65
Surfing the Nations is an incredible organization that changed my life on my mission trip in July 2011. They focus on the community as a whole. The organization has made it a goal to transform the darkness of Wahiawa and bring God's light. When people think of Hawaii, they think of expensive hotels, palm trees and vacation spots, but underneath all that glamour, lies a state like any other. On the island of Oahu, in Wahiawa, a city that few have ever heard of, is the base of Surfing the Nations.
On my second day there, we traveled to Aiea and partnered with Feeding the Hungry and distributed boxed food, vegetables and fruit, but when we first arrived, we walked throughout the lines of people waiting and got to know them, acknowledge them as people rather than "people on the street," like so many others have before. As I was walking around the lines, i spotted a woman who I was completely drawn to, when I went over to speak to her, she told me this: Her son had been stabbed while he was walking along the street back on the mainland and was in critical condition and she needed prayer for his health and for his life. Surfing the Nations creates oppurtunities for some to love the unloved, those that are pushed aside or looked at with disgust.
On the third day, I participated in a sports camp for the neighboring children, where we coached them in soccer. Children who walk around without shoes or only have a single meal a day....were smiling and laughing, holding our hands and jumping with excitement for the next drill or turn to kick the ball. It was amazing to see how when they first arrived, they were afraid and nervous about playing soccer with "church kids from CA"....but after the first hour, these kids could not get enough piggy backs, wanted to race us down the field and were asking us questions about our church and what CA was like.
The location of the base is just as amazing of a story, their base is a bar that served liquor and spirits, but today, it is a coffee shop that has pastries and smoothies. The building next door was once a shop that sold pornography, but is now the building that hosts "Surfer's Church," where locals can come to worship and accept the Lord into their lives. Currently, they are working on remodeling the apartment complex they purchased, to eventually opent the doors to those that need shelter or a permanent home.Surfing the Nations is building and choosing to change Wahiawa, one building at a time, to change those tainted, into those filled and radiating light. Why not help them expand and create a better neighborhood for the children and their families?
