Surgery for Silu
Organized by: steven lynch
While spending the Christmas & New Year holidays in India to help my friend Steve Lynch, founder of Project Om Shanti get back on his feet after recent surgery, I had the opportunity to meet some of the patients and the families that Project Om Shanti has helped.
Steve spends 6 months a year living and working in India helping people with Neurofibromatosis (elephant man syndrome) obtain needed surgery.
This one young man I met, stole my heart. He is 23 years old and one of the
most compassionate, sweet and hilarious young men I have had
the pleasure of meeting. His full name is Silambarasan..... Silu for short.
I kept mispronouncing his name as C-Lo as in the rapper, so I shared videos of C-Lo with him and we laughed together. The sound of this young man’s laugh just filled my heart with so much joy.
Silu travels once a month from his home town of Tamil Nadu in the
southeast corner of India to Amrita hospital in Cochi, Kerala, which
is a 12 hour train ride to the southwest of India. I personally
travelled with him and have to tell you this is not an easy endeavor
for anyone, let alone an intensely disfigured young man. I witnessed so many stares
and glares of the people passing by Silu, during his regular train journeys to prepare his jaw, which has to be broken or sawed in half soon, in order to reshape his face. He is one very
brave and kind soul through all this and all he wants is what most
of us take for granted, a regular conversation and a few laughs. He hesitantly
dreams of meeting a girl and perhaps to get married.
Silu has upcoming surgery and needs assistance. I’m reaching out, to not
only share this story, which has forever change my life, but to give you
the opportunity to connect with a fellow human being. Just like you and I, Silu only wants
to live a simple life without being seen as his genetic deformity.
If this story touches you, I hope you will contribute to Silu's surgery. Who
knows, maybe in the future he will have the possibility to invite you to his wedding.
Thanks in advance for your support.
