Survivor Sandy to CancerCon and Beyond!
Organized by: Sandy Castillo
EVENT DATE Apr 10, 2016
Hey there, Yes, it's me Sandy and every since my advocate buddy Amber passed in November, I've been hunkered down getting to the nitty gritty of my own life and finding exactly what it is that I am here to do. And that is continuing to be a Global Patient Advocate sharing my voice about Cancer as not only a disease but an unbalance of our own self care and self love.
For the past four months I've been trading services with friends while living at home with my parents who are retired. Now it's time to get this show on the road because there is so much yet to be done! This money will help fund gas in my car to continue meeting with healthcare providers and the newly diagnosed to share my inspiration for so many nonprofits including the Young Survival Coalition where I continue be a State Leader. I just received approval to have expenses reimbursed to host two events in Austin for Body Awareness and Media Awareness yet I still need the funds to spend in the first place, and a box full of breast cancer treatment navigators and the new Metastatic Navigator has Amber's photo on the cover!
For all those that are not here with me anymore, I am asking for your support as I continue to advocate for self-care and self-love as the anti-cancer drug truly needed by everyone. And through yoga, breathing, loving, caring, community, dancing, tapping, gonging, drumming, camping, hiking and laughing, just to name a few, there is a medicine for each one of us to share. Yet, there isn't a job for this (not yet) and this is exactly what I've been doing since my own diagnosis in 2009. I've been on numerous scholarships to cancer-centric conferences around the world to return and share the information on my web site sandymcastillo.org and the education has been tremendous. I studied Architecture in college and in 2013 completed studies in Nonprofit Leadership. And this is why I am living with my parents who've always supported me and offer a safe place for me to live while they are on a fixed income, because I have been charting a new direction in my own life for the good of others and the community. It's because I believe whole heartedly in what I've been doing and what I continue to do! Good news is that I continue to interview for positions within the cancer community to share my experience in a part time or full time role yet this in between stage needs your support!
First, your support will put gas in my car to get to interviews, survivors, super connections, and the airport. Second, your support will send me to the upcoming CancerConference in Colorado in April to experience and witness new cool fun awesome cancer programming especially since I couldn't attend last year with Amber and now she is gone. And thirdly, your support will give me the opportunity to kick off the second half of my life moving to where I am needed the most, where I can do the most good and where I can find my own happyness and enjoyment.
I've never asked before and in the past I've asked for everyone else but myself until NOW. I've been living on donations, trades and inconsistent work projects over the years and I'm much stronger for the experience. My presence is essential to my progress and each dollar will lovingly be accounted for to help me out of the burbs and into the world where I am needed. I'm here to share my experience and work to change the landscape of a cancer diagnosis with heightened awareness in the community about all-cancer-type survivorship through self-love and self-care experiences. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
