BENEFITING: American Diabetes Association, Inc.
EVENT: Women's Series Tour de Cure
EVENT DATE: Oct 23, 2016
Mileage Tracker: 55
The fundraiser event was 10/23/2106, and I have 30 more days to complete my fundraising. I rode my bicycle 55 miles through the vineyards and rolling hills in the Pleasanton and Livermore, CA area. It was a beautiful cool sunny day with about 300 women riders, but some did the shorter 'family friendly' routes. Many riders were Type 1 or 2 diabetics themselves and wore the special ADA red/black jersey.
I am passionate about finding the cure since my Dad has Type 2 diabetes, and is one of the 44% who eventually gets kidney failure from the current long-term medications they use to treat it. I have been tested as pre-diabetic, but am currently controlling it through a low-carb diet, taking certain extra trace minerals (chromium+vanadium), and exercise, but not all people are so lucky.
The fact that children get Type 1 diabetes is horrible, with an average age of onset of just 14 years old, and it lasts a lifetime. The researchers have discovered various strains of a certain virus cause pancreatic insulin production failure , with some strains fast-acting (3 days!) and some slow (years and years), and some strains do nothing at all. They hope to have a vaccine against Type 1 soon by using the inert strain(s) against the virulent strains. They are very close to getting this figured out, but need the money for further research and human trials.
So please help support the fight against diabetes, especially if any of your friends or family members have it. We are SO close to a cure.
