ORGANIZER: SUSAN G KOMEN Pittsburgh
EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2017
EVENT DATE: May 07, 2017
Hey all, I decided to take it back up a notch this year and run the Dick's Sporting Goods Pittsburgh Marathon! As many of you may know, my mother passed away in 2006 from Ovarian cancer at the young age of 51 right before I moved away to go to Pitt. Obviously this has had an enormous impact on my life, and since its happened, I've participated in many events supporting this cause, even getting the support of my fraternity brothers in college who created and sponsored an event in remembrance of my mother as a surprise to me. Last year, with everyone’s help, we raised nearly $1500 for the National Ovarian Coalition of Pittsburgh last year! Sadly, the Coalition has decided not to participate in this year’s Marathon, so I have decided to go in a slightly different direction with a much more widely known female cancer, but absolutely just as deadly.
In June of this year, my best friend Spenser McGrath mother, aka my 2nd mom, Cheryl McGrath was diagnosed as HER2-postivie with breast cancer. Thankfully, it was caught early, and after 2 successful operations and the grueling chemotherapy, the cancer has gone into remission. Next for Momma McGrath is radiation treatment, which we pray will defeat the cancer for good. One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, and breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in woman.
In response, for the Marathon this year, I’ve chosen to pledge $1000 to benefit Susan G. Komen Pittsburgh for the Cure in Cheryl’s honor. It would be fantastic if anyone or everyone would please donate $26 to this cause, $1 for each mile I will run in honor of my moms and to help in the fight against breast cancer. Think of it as the equivalent of eating in one more time this week, or skipping that round of shots you don't really need when you're out over the holidays. Any bit you have to spare would mean the world to me. Even if you don't donate, thank you for reading this far and giving me any of your time. Happy Holidays to everyone!
