THE STORY:

Susanne and Stephanie Iacobelli wrote -

I am dancing for the Pink Fund because cancer treatment takes a toll on a women’s life.  Women are strong and take care of the home,  children and sometimes financial responsibilities on top of everything else……Cancer treatment takes so much out of a women that she is unable to do simple, normal day to day functions like going to work to pay for the rent or food for her children…. this disease is horrible and takes everything you have just to survive.   Breast Cancer patients need all the help they can get in all areas of life to beat this disease and keep living and being there for themselves and their loved ones.  I am dancing for the Pink Fund to help support those women who need financial help during this time to help support their families during treatment.  Coming from someone who understands, I am doing this to support the fighters.  Dance has been a part of my life and my daughter’s life in more ways than one.  Dance was what helped my daughter, Stephanie, stay strong as she watched me fight this dreaded disease.  Dancing for a cause brings us so much happiness, and we hope it will bring happiness and hope to others as well.

In 2005, on my 45th birthday, I entered Karmanos Breast Cancer Center at 10am meeting the physician, doing the normal tests that turned into a breast ultra sound and then a breast biopsy.  When all the doctors and nurses came in for the biopsy, I knew things were not good.  My doctor also knew things were not good, but no matter what she did she could not get any of the test results in before I left at 7pm.  She sent me home with breast cancer information, which they never usually do without test results. I went home to my family and my 12-year old daughter who just lost her Aunt Lee to breast cancer and her grandmother to Ovarian cancer.  She knew something was not right even though I didn’t say anything except I was waiting for results.  She started crying and so did I. It was an unforgettable 45th birthday.

The Tuesday following the Friday appointment, my husband and I received the information that I indeed had breast cancer.  After my mastectomy, we learned I was a 2B, Invasive Adenocarcinoma with Ductal and Lobular features, plus  4 out of 8 lymph nodes and 1 sentinel lymph node were infected.

The most valuable lesson that I have received after having breast cancer is that you do not have control of your life… only God does… and he will give you the strength to fight or handle anything you encounter as long as you ask him too.

Breast cancer awakened  me to my Lord and Savior and his Blessed Mother.   I could never have gotten through all my surgeries and treatments without their help.   I was so surprised when my children’s school, St. Hugo of the Hills, set up a program for me, and other mothers who were afflicted with breast cancer to deliver dinner three times a week….and we were able to find a wonderful nanny to help take my children to and from school, extra activities, and keep up the house and meals.
