My name is Susan Schmitt and I am a doctoral student teaching and studying at Texas Woman’s University. In 2009, I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma while I was pursuing my master’s degree at Washington State University. I underwent surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatment for over a year and shortly after my last radiation treatment, I successfully defended my master’s thesis and was accepted into the doctoral program in women’s studies at Texas Woman’s University. However, I accrued several large medical bills from treatment and these medical debts continue to be a barrier for me as I advance in my studies. A scholarship would help curb tuition costs and ensure that I do not have to leave my studies.
