On October 4th 2016, Hurricane Matthew devastated the southern region of Haiti. Specifically the town of Port-Salut a town of roughly 5,000 people. The majority of the homes in this area have now been destroyed, and many of the residents are now homeless. Those with nowhere to go have began seeking shelter at my grandmother Annette Champagne’s home, and, at her school Institution Mixed Communautaire Bon Berger, an elementary school serving the Port-Salut community.
To respond to the effects of Hurricane Matthew, and to provide sustainable development, our Institution Mixed Communautaire Bon Berger, a 501(c)(3) organization, is looking to build housing for families devastated by Hurricane Matthew. Many of the students who attend the school are now without shelter, and those of us who were and are students, know that in order to have a better chance of success in the classroom, basic resources such as food, clothes and shelter must be present. To commence this project we would like to collect funds in order to hire a local Haitian construction company to build houses for as many families as possible.
As immediate emergency resources, such as water and food are imperative, we believe that investment, and supporting initiatives led by Haitian people, will create a model of sustainability that Haitians can benefit from for years to come. Let’s stand together as the Haitian motto “L’Union Fait La Force” suggest, and use our strength, to build sustainable housing for the people of Port-Salut.
Thank you for your support!
