Sustainable Biofuel Supply and Empowerment: Jatropha Farming
Organized by: Sandip Subedi
Event Name: CGI U Commitments Challenge 2016
Our Commitment To Action, Sustainable Biofuel Supply and Empowerment: Jatropha Farming, started in 2013 and has been continuously moving forward with two main goals - using jatropha as a biofuel, and creating employment opportunities for the local farmers. As of now, we have been successful in providing training to 30 students of Nuwara Subedithar Higher Secondary School and 10 community members of Pang village on Jatropha farming. We have also been successful in incorporating Jatropha farming in the school curriculum. Likewise, we have secured 15 acres of government-owned land as a donation to promote Jatropha farming. Similarly, we have set up a link with Everest Refinery, a biodiesel company, which will provide the farmers with the seeds for plantation and buy the produced seeds.
In the winter of 2016/2017, we will be travelling to Nepal to train more students and farmers in the 15 acres of land donated to this project. We believe that this project will help unemployed and underemployed farmers in this rural part of Nepal to generate a stable source of income. Moving forward, we aim to tackle the problem of poverty and unemployment through a sustainable measure which is Jatropha Farming.
The funds raised in this campaign will directly be used for training purposes and a small amount will also be used to buy Jatropha seeds for initial training programs.
