in the US, 23.5 million people live in "food deserts," geographic areas where access to healthy, affordable food options (mainly fresh fruits + veggies) is either limited or doesn't exist, often because grocery stores are too far away. many think that food deserts are under-reported, and often, residents living in food deserts also have a hard time finding foods that are culturally relevant and meet dietary restrictions. we are a family that loves to eat and knows the importance of food to culture and identity. no one should struggle with food insecurity. mill creek farm is an educational urban farm located in west philadelphia, a low income area. they are dedicated to improving local access to fresh produce, building a healthy community and environment, and promoting a just and sustainable food system. They value: "The neighborhood in which we farm. We work with our neighbors to strengthen our community. Experiential education. We provide hands-on, farm-based learning opportunities. Our environment. We demonstrate innovative ways to foster sustainable living. Community and collaboration. We work with and exchange ideas with others. Urban food production. We foster the connection between people and the food they eat. Equity and justice. We believe healthy, affordable food is a basic human right." they not only grow food for local distribution, but also operate an interactive educational center, offer tours, host field trips and community skill-share workshops. MCF offers market internships and employs high-school youth in a leadership development job training program during the summer months, and fosters inter-generational exchange between young people and elders. their innovative tool shed is a model of green building and reuse techniques that include cob, solar electric, living roof, compost toilet, graywater collection, and found object mosaic. the farm houses a bee apiary, fruit orchard, and children's garden. i mean, damn, that's a whole lot for a community-based nonprofit to do. but all this is connected. we love their integrated approach and can't wait to get connected with them in philly! food is a basic human right.
