Suzanne's Everglades Non-Profit Start-Up Fund
Organized by: Suzanne Green
The Florida Everglades is one of the most beautiful, important, and unique ecosystems in the world. Despite this, it faces severe environmental, economic and political threats - as do its surrounding communities. There are many people and organizations doing good work on behalf of the Everglades, but there are also issues that aren't being actively advocated for. Decaying visitor facilities, budget cuts to interpretive programs, and the deep rift that has been created between park officials and the local communities are a few examples. Those issues may seem less dire, but they have a big impact on the overall wellbeing of the Everglades and our ability to enjoy and appreciate it. I've got some good ideas that can help, and I'm raising money to start a non-profit organization to do just that. The purpose of this organization will be to:
- Create a community garden & gathering space in Everglades City, Florida.
- Use that gathering space to host lecturers, storytellers, and musicians in order to provide the community and its many visitors with educational and entertaining outdoor programs.
- Provide interpretive nature programs (hiking, paddling, camping, etc.) for local children and families that otherwise would not have the opportunity to explore their own "backyard."
- Raise funds to restore, rebuild, and rehabilitate the visitor facilities located in our surrounding national and state parks and to provide financial support to the park's interpretive programs.
But before we can start doing all that, we need to take care of business...
Our goal is to raise $2,000 by November 31st, 2014. 100% of donations raised will be used for start-up expenses like filing for IRS 501(c)3 status, obtaining the necessary permits and licensing from state and local governments, creating a website for the organization, and all the other legal/necessary stuff. Then, we can start bringing great programs to the community and raising funds for the state and national parks that make up the Everglades.
Help us create something awesome, strengthen our community, and support our parks!
