EVENT DATE: Sep 17, 2014
In September I will be travelling to Kenya and walking 100 miles with Samburu tribesman across the wild Leroghi Plateau to the Kirisia Hills to raise funds to support the Space for Giants organization (Tusk is US partner) who are spearheading a critical anti-poaching initiative. The money raised will fund employment, training, equipment and salaries for the community anti-poaching scouts in the Laikipia region, home to one of Africa's last free-ranging elephant populations.
One elephant is killed every 15 minutes for it's ivory - approximately 100 a day. At this rate they will be close to extinction in less than 10 years. Elephants are vital to the eco-system and suffer dreadfully from this genocide. Many are killed in horrific ways and die long and painful deaths. Elephants, like humans, grieve for their dead. Many baby elephants are left orphaned and die. When an elephant is poached and killed, the whole herd suffers from the loss as they form close, lifelong relationships with their family members. They are vital to the eco-system and without them all wildlife will suffer.
Local communities are trying desperately to protect them and you can help through ME. Please give your support, no donation is too small and be a part of saving these wonderful animals for our next generation.
You can also donate offline by contacting me directly. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for caring - no donation is too small.
I visited Kenya 2 years ago with my family. I have always been a big cat lover and still am but when we came across a herd of around 50 elephants, after spending hours watching these wonderful animals I became hooked. To be able to see these animals in their natural habitat and witness their behaviour and how they interact with each other is truly amazing.
Since then I have made numerous posts on Facebook, donations, adopted 2 elephants at the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi (www.sheldrikwildlifetrust.org) in an effort to spread the word and help the struggle in saving them. I have always been frustrated not being able to do more.
Last year (September 17th) I underwent major back surgery after being bed-bound for weeks. In January it came to my notice of this wonderful opportunity to be able to really do something in the fight against poaching. When I saw that this event was due to commence September 17th, the anniversary of my surgery I felt like it was meant for me. It has given me the strength and determination in giving myself a goal to heal. This walk will be tough but with the help and support of friends, colleagues and fellow animal lovers it will make each mile that much easier.
NEVER SHOULD WE LOOK BACK AND SAY.....
I SHOULD OF HELPED THEM WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE.
Tusk is the US partner for Space for Giants which is an international conservation charity in the UK and Kenya. Space for Giants vision is to develop models of conservation that enable people to support and sustain populations of large mammals and the natural landscapes they depend on. They do this with a holistic and integrated action plan that includes;
1) Preventing poaching of Elephants
2) Mitigating human-wildlife conflicts
3) Securing space
4) Training the next generation of conservationists
All funds raised will go to Space for Giants (via Tusk) for their anti-poaching efforts in Kenya.
