Our amazing and beloved daughter Mielle has been living with Juvenile Myositis (JM) for seven years - diagnosed at the age of 5 (the video at left was made in 2009).
At the time she was diagnosed, Mielle suffered constant, debilitating pain, weakness and fatigue. And then there was the treatment -- an incredibly brutal regimine of steroids, chemotherapy and immunosuppressants -- with horrible side effects that rivaled the disease itself. Those were some dark, dark days.
JM affects 17,000 children and adults in the U.S. alone. It causes the body's own immune system to attack healthy cells and tissues, which can cause pain, weakness, inability to walk, disfigurement, and even death. JM can affect virtually any system of the body, the heart, lungs, skin, muscles, and more. It's serious. It breaks my heart to say that we have known several children who have lost their lives to complications of JM.
Mielle's symptoms are currently being managed with powerful medications, and we hope and pray that one day, she will be able to wean off them. We hope and pray that one day, there will be A CURE.
Please help! Your donation can help us find that cure!
Cure JM Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Juvenile Myositis. Cure JM is the ONLY organization that solely supports Juvenile Myositis and is the largest charitable supporter of JM research.
With the rarity of this disease, your gift is vital to permitting further studies into finding the cause, best treatments and a possible cure. There is truly no other source of funding beyond what we raise as a community.
And this October, families from around the world are joining together in San Jose to fight JM. I'll be running 13.1 miles yet again - this is something like my 18th race in the six years I've been running. I've got to say, I'm tired, y'all. But I'll keep doing it, gratefully, if it will help.
Our goal is to never, ever let another child suffer from Juvenile Myositis. And with your help, this goal is well within our reach! Please, please help if you can!
