Swaziland is a tiny African country with the highest rate of AIDS in the world. According to WHO, by 2050 (so very soon), if nothing is done, this country will be wiped out completely. In 2009, Zech & I were able to see, first hand, what the HIV/AIDS epidemic has done & is doing. Despite the ugliness of poverty, disease, & death, we fell in love with the country, the vibrant culture, the beautiful people, & a few years later, WE fell in love & got married.
It's now been over 2 years that we haven't been back to the place we feel most whole. Every day (literally), Africa has not left our minds, & really is what drives us to finish our education & work our jobs. We've prayed long & hard about timing, & know that its finally time to go back. This trip will be about 2 whole months, this summer!
We are simple people. In nothing short of a miracle, we both have the same long-term dreams & passions: to serve the Swazi people & do our best, in what small & humble ways we can, to turn the statistics around. We're not afraid to give up our jobs, leave our home, friends, & family, & return to Africa. Fear isn't a problem for us. Cost, however, is a small bump in the road.
We're making this page in hopes that some of you may have a few dollars to spare to help our cause. We hate asking for money, but one of our previous donors told us: "Not everyone can GO and DO what you're doing; giving is OUR way of going."
We have a lot of money to raise and not a lot of time to do it. But we both have a lot of peace about this trip, as uncertain as the details are.
We aren't going to "change the world". We firmly believe that change happens one person at a time. We also firmly believe that the statistics will be proven wrong, & Swaziland will be thriving & very much alive when 2050 comes around. So we'll leave you with a quote by Nelson Mandela:
"It always seems impossible until it's done."
Every dollar will help us get there. Thanks for reading.
