Give Hope, Fight Poverty is a service learning program that gives students an opportunity to get hands-on learning about the culture, health problems, and food crisis of Swaziland, Africa. Swaziland has one of the highest prevalence of HIV and AIDS with about 39.2% of adults infected, but that is only the beginning of the problem. Due to the deaths caused AIDS and other diseases, Swaziland is home to 120,000 orphaned children. Around 15,000 of these orphans have had to step up and be the head of their households while they are grieving the loss of their parents and assume responsibility for younger siblings.
During this trip, I will have the opportunity to empower some of these orphans through projects like installing computer labs, planting fruit-bearing trees, creating feeding programs, and sustaining orphans education. I will be working hands-on in an environment of a new culture with health disparities and poverty. This will give me exposure to real life issues and foster my creativity to come up with innovative solutions. I will be making an impact on health and wellness on a global scale and prepare me for a future of a world without borders.
