The Rugged Maniac has partnered with many non-profit companies to provide exposure and help earn funds to benefit these wonderful organizations. This year the race has paired with Soccer Without Borders, an organization I've been volunteering with in Greeley for nearly a year. I'm running in hope of recieving a small amount of donations and of course to amuse the kids I work with.
The city of Greeley, Colorado is home to more than 2,000 refugees, in particular from Somalia and Burma, many of whom land in Greeley for access to industrial and agricultural jobs. Challenges of language, cultural, and a lack of social supports facing these refugees in Northern Colorado are many. The Greeley program started in 2011 when The Force, a semi-professional women’s soccer team from Northern Colorado was contracted to run after school soccer programs for refugee students at John Evans Middle School. When the soccer camps ended in the fall of 2011, the need for additional programming was evident. Soon after, the Force leadership launched the Colorado Storm and partnered with Soccer Without Borders to develop an ongoing program in early 2012. Today, the program has five middle and high school teams and operates year round, providing educational opportunities on and off the field.
In addition to helping kids adapt to their new community, the organization encourages and rewards those who are elidgable for a college education. As a recent graduate, the donations I recieve will be doubled. In other words, if I raise $200 it will be doubled by the organization coming to a total of $400.
Thank you in advance!
