Sweaters & Sustenance: Bringing warmth to those most in need
Organized by: John Allen
Twelve years ago, my father passed away of cancer. My father was someone who was greatly admired by his family, friends, and community. As a way to remember and honor him, I started what is now known as Sweaters & Sustenance. Our mission is to spread warmth and love during the holiday season to those who are less fortunate through the distribution of warm, healthy meals and gently worn winter clothes. Sweaters & Sustenance has grown tremendously during the past twelve years. Over thirty volunteers come together each year to make a tremendous difference in the lives of hundreds of homeless men and women in Washington, D.C. It is remarkable what we can do when we work together to make a difference…and we could not be more excited to triple our impact this year. This year, we will be serving the cities of Washington D.C., Boston, MA, and Carlisle, Pennsylvania. With this expansion, we are partnering with six different service-minded organizations in order to create a tangible difference in these communities during the holiday time. I am writing to ask for your support to help with our efforts this year. Your gift will truly make a difference for those who are most in need. Below, you will find the project efforts for each city:
WASHINGTON, DC: We will continue with our tradition of serving homeless men, women, and children a warm, healthy meal and gently worn winter clothes. We are thrilled to be partnering with Miracle Messages as our missions closely align to helping those who are homeless.
BOSTON: Over 25 children will receive a customized basket of gifts based on their wish list which will include clothing, athletic gear, and books. All children will be chosen by principals based on family need. We will be partnering with three phenomenal schools – Edward Brooke Charter School, Spark Academy, and Phoenix Charter Academy.
CARLISLE: As a Dickinson College alum who spent four years volunteering around the Carlisle area, I am excited to make an even greater impact this year by partnering with Carlisle CARES and Project SHARE, organizations whose missions focus on bring warmth to the hungry and homeless of Carlisle, PA.
Thank you in advance for your generosity during this holiday season! We couldn't make a difference in the lives of others without you! John Allen Founder, Sweaters & Sustenance www.sweatersandsustenance.com
