Sweet December Day, a song for Pearl Harbor

THE STORY:

In May of this year, I found out the Leon Russell performance I was supposed to open for, was being postponed to Dec 7. I realized that it was the night before John Lennon was shot, and that it was Pearl Harbor Day. I also figured out that it was the 75th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor, "a day that will live in infamy". It occurred to me, having written several songs for victims of major tragedies, that I should attempt to write something for Pearl Harbor. After reading a few different books, describing in great detail, the days leading up to Pearl Harbor, and watching some actual footage, I quickly made a very strong emotional connection to an event I had previously not known much about.

It struck me what a beautiful paradise Oahu was, and how the day of the attack was not only so starkly different, but completely unprecedented and unexpected. I was also struck by the discord and the rampant mistrust within the community itself, particularly towards Japanese-Americans. I believe that through extending empathy, and utilizing music and art, that we can help to promote healing, and make the world a better place. Not only will I be performing this song at the Tower Theatre in Bend, on Dec 7,

I have also been asked by The Sons and Daughters of Pearl Habor Survivors, if they could play my song (a recorded version) either during the actual ceremony on Oahu on Dec 7, and/or at the convention following the ceremony. I was recently laid off from my full-time job teaching music, and I am currently unemployed, so I do not have any funds to put towards recording. I would love to be able to give this song the treatment it deserves, and create something truly beautiful to play on Oahu, at Pearl Harbor, on Dec 7, to honor the victims of this tragedy, the survivors, and everyone who was affected.

Please consider contributing what you can. Times are challenging, but together we can create miracles and make a difference in the world, no matter how small.

I will of course send you a digital download of the completed recording.

Sweet December Day ©2016 Victor Johnson
Would you look out your window and see paradise
Feel the wind on a sweet December day
Stillness in the sky
The breeze floating by
People going on their way
Lovely mountains beautiful eyes
Gentle showers leave rainbows dancing in the blue
A crescendo of waves where the dolphins play
All the flowers are in bloom
No sadness, no gloom
So enchanting today
Morning stars they’re shining through

Chorus: Fire falling from above
Sirens shatter the still
Blackness louder than the planes
Sent to burn and to kill
The water rushing in
Battleships they’re sinking below
No one dreamed this could be
How did nobody see
How did nobody know

Wake up to the smell of fresh chrysanthemums
Greet the sun laughing so lightly now
Volcano weathered folds
Pele hot lava holds
Red curls bouncing on her brow
A lullaby she hums
Crystal silence wafting through the light of dawn
Soft memories bear love from the night before
Faces all aglow
Time moves oh so slow
I walk out my door
The sunrise seems painted on

Chorus
Break
Chorus

Would you look out your window and see paradise
Feel the wind on a sweet December day
