EVENT: Swim for Grand Traverse Bay

In just over a month (August 13), I am going to swim two miles across the Grand Traverse Bay, one of the most beautiful and dynamic bodies of water I have been lucky enough to see, let alone live near. This isn’t just for fun, but will raise money that will go towards supporting the Grand Traverse Watershed. Please consider a contribution of $50, $25, or whatever works best for you. I appreciate whatever support you can give, and remember, I’ll be swimming two miles across the Bay to earn your money.
In February of 2012, stuck in the US Embassy in Cairo getting ready to be evacuated from Egypt, but not allowed to go back and pack up my apartment, I was asked where I wanted the contents of my apartments sent. When, just a few months’ shy of my 40th Birthday, I was forced to answer, “My parents’ garage,” to that question, I immediately made a decision.
I needed a home.
I wasn’t even sure what was in my storage unit, but five years without a permanent home, just work housing to work housing needed to end. The good thing was that I had lived and/or traveled to so many places that I had the whole world to choose from. The bad thing is that it is a big, beautiful world and I had so many places to choose from.
Ultimately, I decided on Traverse City, Michigan. Some people who know me thought it seemed a bit crazy, after the energy of larger cities like Cairo, Dubai, DC, I chose a town of 14,000 people, with no international airport, and more trees than pretty much anything else.
But, I wanted a retreat, a place, where I could bike and walk pretty much everywhere. There are wineries, microbreweries, and amazing restaurants. And the awesome summer makes up (mostly) for the less than awesome winters.
And of course, Lake Michigan. Every day, I wake up, and generally, depending on the season either walk or bike on the trail behind my house to downtown, sometimes heading to yoga, sometimes for a run, sometimes to visit my awesome nieces (and their parents), sometimes just headed to a great meal (or a long bike ride before a great meal). As I take the first turn on the trail I see Boardman Lake and the mouth of the Boardman River, and am always taken aback at how lucky I am to live here.
So, all that is why I am going to attempt to swim two miles across Grand Traverse Bay in August, to help an organization that is dedicated to protecting the Bay and the surrounding watershed. And why I’m asking you to support this by contributing $50, $25, or as much as you can afford. Thanks for anything you can do, I know there are a lot of great causes out there, so any contribution is greatly appreciated.
