My Qualifier Swim: "Become Friends with the Cold"
June 07, 2016
BENEFITING: Navy SEAL Foundation
EVENT DATE: Aug 01, 2016
Hello! My name is Kate, and I'm an open water swimmer. In August 2016 I will be swimming the English Channel on a 5-person relay team with my coach Trent Grimsey. Trent set the English Channel World Record in 2012 for the fastest swim at 6 hours, 55 minutes.
This is, by far, the toughest open water challenge I have undertaken to date. I train in the Pacific Northwest, in Puget Sound and Lake Washington. Sometimes my swims are peaceful and meditative. However, other times I find myself battling wind, rain & ocean swells, enduring the numbing stinging on my face of the chop, and add to that various jellyfish and other acquatic life.
It really is a thrill, and that's why I do it. But sometimes when it's tough, my body feels like giving up. These are the times I use the power of the mind, and I visualize myself as a Navy SEAL. This technique has really helped me keep going. I have found that imagery is an extremely powerful tool, and with the visual of the commitment and will of a Navy SEAL, I am able to power through and achieve what my body doubts and it's a glorious feeling!
It seems only fitting that I give back to the Navy SEALs who have (unknowingly) helped me on so many occasions!
