THE STORY:

On 22 November 2010, on the final night of the Cambodian Water Festival celebrations in Phnom Penh, panic occurred among the 1,000s of mainly young people who were crossing a bridge to Koh Pich to participate in a music festival. During the panic, many people jumped from the bridge to save themselves... but in Cambodia, many people know how to swim. Over 300 people died that night, many of them in the waters of the Tonle Bassac.

A year before, two friends went into the waters off the coast of Sihanoukville, a popular destination for both foreigners and locals, to pull out the already dead body of a local man whom had died while fishing by hand off rocks in order to try to earn money to support his family. The Cambodians who asked my friends for help, were too afraid to enter the water themselves.

In a country with such a high proportion of the population living by and off the water, the number of deaths by drowning is too high (each year over 2,000 children die by drowning).

SwimSkills Cambodia aims to teach Cambodian basic life support skills in the water; for themselves and of others. They will also be taught basic CPR skills.
