Children across the nation, but especially in Chicago's urban district, which currently faces a $1 billion budget shortfall, aren't getting the access they need to high-quality in-school arts education and social-emotional learning (SEL) opportunities. Additionally, children in Chicago are heavily affected by the state of Illinois cuts to funding for after school programs, childcare, and teen employment programs. Swing for Kids leverages its unique position as a nonprofit in the arts and SEL space with local supporters of Swing Dance to provide low and no-cost programming to Chicago's most vulnerable youth.
Our programs serve young people affected by the trauma of community violence and effects of poverty by offering supportive supplemental education opportunities both during the school day and in the after school environment. Our versatile curricula are based in research on strategies to increase resiliency, reduce negative coping skills, and provide outlets for expression and creativity that lead to gains in the classroom and in life.
Children who participate in Swing for Kids learn to cooperate with their classmates and reduce the likelihood that behavior problems distract from teaching and learning or remove children from their classrooms. Young participants also gain valuable skills in body awareness, social appropriateness, goal setting, collaboration, and leadership while learning about the history and social fabric that gave birth to the Great American tradition of Jazz music and Swing dance.
