THE STORY:

Syed Falahi Center in Lahore, Pakistan was founded in February 2011 by Haider's parents, Dr. Syeddah Ghazala Nayyar (Ammi Jee) and Dr. Syed Irfan M. Nayyar (Abbu Jee) in an under privileged vicinity of Lahore. The school focuses on teaching basic reading, writing and some vocational training such as sewing, knitting and hemming to young girls and women with no or little means of livelihood. The objective is to enable them to become an earning hand and support themselves and their families.

Although small, over the past 3 years the school has helped over 300 young women to improve their economic situation and well being. The school is run by an ex-student of Abbu Jee, Yousaf Uncle, and his wonderful family (wife and two college graduate daughters). Thus far the running cost of this charitable school is being met from the monthly savings of Ammi Jee.

While on a family trip to Lahore in December 2013, we managed to visit the School in the late hours of the night. Although there was a power cut in the neighborhood - a scheduled load shedding due to electricity shortages across Pakistan - the industrious Yousaf Uncle, his wife, and children greeted us with flashlights and equally luminous, welcoming smiles. They led us up the stairs and beamed the rays of light around the simple room and veranda that makes up the whole school. One and a half-dozen or so sewing machines lay on the wooden benches with a short stack of books and notebooks placed on a table in the corner. Despite presenting a rather humble portrayal of a learning center the premises epitomized a commitment and resolve to make a difference.

With unparalleled satisfaction Yousaf Uncle flipped through a thick register that contained the roster of all students from years past. Some, he explained, were enrolled for several months, while others could only attend once or come sporadically due to security, permission, and time scarcity that traditionally accompanies economic hardship. With pride, he briefed us on the number of former students that have become, albeit in a meager way, stable contributors to their family's financial well being.

Although we had to leave quickly and could never see the school in action due to personal commitments, it was moving to see how something so simple could have such a telling impact on the welfare of poor and dis-empowered segment of the society - the female folks.

In our effort to further our support of this cause, we have decided to request our friends to donate to the school in lieu of wedding gifts. The funds will be used to:
-Provide new books for lessons
-Purchase basic supplies like pencils and notebooks
-Get 3 new sewing machines
-Buy knitting needles, yarn, and thread
-Meet some of the management costs

We are looking to raise a total of $2000 for the education center so donations between $10-$30 are more than enough from anyone interested in helping us support a cause so close to our hearts.

We cannot thank you enough for your love and support, we look forward to celebrating with you very soon!
