BENEFITING: National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Sep 22, 2013
I will be running the Buzzards Bay Triathlon in support of the National Organization of Rare Disorders. In the US, a rare disease is defined as a disease or condition that affects less than 200,000 people. Although the term "rare" may imply a small number of people, it is estimated that roughly 350 million people worldwide are affected with a rare disease.
Those affected by a rare disease show tremendous courage, bravery, and tenacity in the face of unimaginable challenges. It is often the case that there are not many treatments available for a particular rare disease or the treatments that are available have serious negative side effects. Despite their hardships and adversity they push on with great fortitude.
Individuals and families who live with a rare disease are an inspiration to me as I would only hope that I would have even half the character they possess in the face of extraordinary challenges. It's for this reason that I want to show my support for individuals and families who are in some way affected by a rare disease.
