I'm taking the plunge into the icy waters at Eastern Point Beach as a "splasher" to raise money for the Mystic Aquarium Animal Rescue Program!!!
splasher (noun): A highly motivated, generous and brave individual who is known to jump from the shores of Eastern Point Beach into the waters of the Long Island Sound with the goal of raising much-needed funds for Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program.
Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team support animals in need in Conn., R.I. and Fishers Island, NY; providing specialized and compassionate care for the rehabilitation of animal with the ultimate goal of releasing them back into their natural habitat.
Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program has been rehabilitating marine mammals since 1975. To date the Aquarium has responded to more than 1,500 stranded seals, whales, dolphins, porpoises and sea turtles.
‘The work we do always strives to undertake a great conservation effort. Through research done at the aquarium and in the field, we hope to better understand the animals that make-up the ocean environment, and by directly impacting individuals within that environment to benefit the overall population, like we’re doing with our rescue and rehabilitation efforts’.
-Janelle Schuh, Stranding Coordinator
