BENEFITING: Tostan, Inc.
Tostan may be turning 25… but we are not too old for a game of TAG!
In this game of TAG, “you’re it” if you believe in the capacity of people and communities to lead their own development.
T - Talk! about the Tostan issue that excites you the most and share your thoughts on social media with #TostanTAG. Is it engaging religious leaders in change, giving children in West Africa a head start on educational success, or shifting the social norms that perpetuate violence toward women? Let us—and everyone else—know what matters to you, and why!
A - Act! Invite 2 or more friends to join the conversation by tagging them; challenge them to have a similar conversation and share what matters to them. Invite them to sign up for the Tostan e-newsletter.
G - Give! For just $10 you can support Tostan and be a part of the great things to come in the next generation.
Create a team and invite others to give to increase your impact and your chances of winning exciting prizes from West Africa: there will be prizes along the way for weekly winners and the captain of the team that raises the most money by December 4th will receive one round-trip flight to Senegal in February 2016 for Tostan's 25th anniversary celebration!
Every donation up to $30,000 will be matched by a generous donor who wants to double our impact.
Help us further the impacts of the Breakthrough Generation, 25 years of holistic community-led change:
In 25 years, Tostan’s Community Empowerment Program (CEP) has touched three million people with meaningful grassroots change, including:
- 19,000+ women selected into community leadership positions and a growing number in elected office
- 3 million+ people living in communities that have publicly declared an end to female genital cutting and child marriage
- 100,000 + people who have learned about democracy and how to make decision-making equitable
- 42,000 + people who have improved their reading skills with a literacy program using mobile phones
How can you contribute?
Meet the Demand for a Human Rights Education: CEP
It costs about $133 to put one person through the 3-year program for a year. Or $12 a month!!
And it costs $22,000 per village for each 3-year CEP: that’s 500 people giving $44!
Bring New Hope to the Future of Africa’s Children: RPP
This year Tostan finished a pilot program, called the Reinforcement of Parental Practices Program (RPP), designed to prepare children for educational success by investing in early childhood development and addressing social norms that prevent parents from interacting with their babies and toddlers. After one year, children in the RPP program had a 50% greater increase in the number of words they used and 95% of the program’s parents became “very knowledgeable ” about Early Childhood Development. The RPP program costs about $8,000 per village and supports 60 caregivers in each village. That’s about $133 per person reached. Tostan has 100 trained facilitators waiting to begin in new communities starting in January. Let’s get them out there!
For the past 25 years we have seen that the small acts of many can collectively change the course of a community’s future.
