Just few things about me:
First thing first, if you would like to learn about me, you need to learn the phrase "Shako Mako!?" It means "what's up!?" in Iraqi Arabic.
Ok now we got that out of the way, I was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. I lived there till I was 16 years old when I was forced to flee my home and seek refuge in Damascus, Syria.
After spending almost 2 years in Syria, I was fortunate to come to the United States to finish my undergraduate studies at Union College, in Schenectady, NY. I must say, coming from Damascus to Upstate New York, I did not like the snow...at all.
Fast forward 7 years later, I am now working with the Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC) to empower youth in Iraq and improve the country's humanitarian situation through on-the-ground projects as well as advocacy in Washington, D.C. Crazy, right?
One of my proudest achievments in my life was being chosen to be part of team that built and launched Soccer Salam: a humanitarian effort to deliver emergency relief supplies and the joy of soccer to displaced Iraqi children and their families.
Living through the 2003 war on Iraq, and witnessing its tragic consequential outcomes, has nourished Taif’s aspirations to fight for peacebuilding, social and economic justice, and human rights advocacy.
