CAAAV holds a very special place in my heart. CAAAV (Committee Against Anti-Asian Violence) initially formed as a response to rising anti-Asian violence in the 1980s. Since then, CAAAV's analysis evolved into an analysis of structural violence - that Asian communities, alongside other marginalized communities, not only face physical violence but more broadly face violence from the social, political, and economic structures that make up our society.
CAAAV has been a pillar in Asian community in NYC, making sure that we all focus on the roots of oppression that plague us all, but people of color in particular.
Recently, CAAAV has focused on anti-gentrification efforts in Chinatown, winning several campaigns against landlords who are unlawfully evicting residents for the development of luxury high-rise condos.
CAAAV's most recent victory is also our most far-reaching. CAAAV campaigned to have the east waterfront redeveloped for community use and CAAAV won!! This has HUGE implications for how development is done in NYC and all metropolitan areas.
Join me on September 8th to celebrate this victory, to sustain CAAAV's work and show your support for a healthy, thriving Chinatown.
