THE STORY:

Sue Kerr wrote -

Students at McGuffey High School in Claysville, Washington County, Pennsylvania experienced backlash to their 'Day of Silence' - a group of classmates organized their own "Anti-Gay" day creating an atmosphere of fear and discomfort for LGBTQA students and allies.

One tactic of the students was to wear flannel shirts and ink the phrase "anti-gay" as part of their fear-mongering approach. After talking with community organizers around the region, I am proposing that we take a stand to show our support for LGBTQA students at McGuffey High School and throughout Washington County.

1. Take a photo - in a flannel shirt - with a sign that shows your support for the LGBTQA students at McGuffey. I suggest something like "I support LGBTQ students at McGuffey High School."

2. Post the photo using the hashtag #TakeTheHighRoad

3. Make a donation of $10.00 (or whatever amount is good for you) to support the Gay Straight Alliance of Washington County which is working on the front lines at McGuffey High.

I support LGBTQIA students not only at McGuffey High, but also across the world. My hope is that the gay community will be more accepted by others over the course of time. To the students that were targeted by the "anti-gay day" at this school, I want you to know that there are people out there such as myself who are alliances of the LGBT community and fully support you. Best of luck! 2 years ago
