BENEFITING: The Multiple System Atrophy Coalition
Multiple system atrophy, or MSA, is a rare, degenerative neurologic condition that affects both men and women, usually starting in the 50’s or early 60’s1. MSA is considered a type of parkinsonism but with more widespread effects on the brain and body. The condition was first identified in 1962 and named Shy-Drager syndrome for two physicians who reported patients showing a combination of Parkinson-like movement disorders and problems with the autonomic, or body-regulating division of the nervous system2. The walk will begin at Nautical Mile Resort in Wells, Maine and proceed to the beach and back. Families will be invited to join us for a small luncheon which will give people an opportunity to share their experiences and make valuable connections. Proceeds from the event will be donated to a charitable organization, MSA Coalition, a 501c charitable organization. This organization is instrumental in providing support to families dealing with this horrific disease. In addition to daily support to families, they also sponsor a yearly seminar to educate physicians, caregivers and patients. The MSA Coalition also provides grants to researchers who are interested in learning about the causes, treatments, and hopefully cure for this disease. Please consider sponsoring one of our walkers! Every step could be a step towards a cure!
