BENEFITING: JEWISH FEDERATION OF THE BLUEGRASS
EVENT DATE: Feb 22, 2011
As most of you know, I work for the Jewish Federation of the Bluegrass. JFB is a non-profit that is part of a national system of similar organizations, all dedicated to helping support the Jewish community at home, in Israel, and around the world. Because I work for the Federation I get inside information on what's up in the Jewish community.
In recent years our local Federation has had to stop giving an allocation to a wonderful program, Taglit - Birthright Israel, due to budget cuts. As someone who was blessed to travel on a Birthright trip, I would like to pay that favor forward and help make sure that more young adults can go.
Taglit has been around for 11 years now. (www.birthrightisrael.com) In that 11 years over 200,000 young Jewish adults between the ages of 18 and 26 have been able to travel to Israel, the Jewish homeland, almost entirely free. This trip changes lives and connects a sometimes distanced and disconnected young Jewish person to their heritage and faith in incredible ways. (It's an awesome place, what can I say?!) The trip did that for me, and this amazing gift has had a transformative affect on the Jewish community across the world already. This year, they will probably celebrate the 300,000th visitor on the program.
However, despite its success and the growing number of participants, less than half of those who apply are able to go. And despite all of the Federations who are still able to raise money for Taglit, and the MANY VERY GENEROUS private donations that have been received, there isn't enough money for everyone to go.
So all of this sounds serious, and maybe boring, and you're probably thinking, "why should I care? I have my own problems to deal with..." I'll tell you what...if you've not been on a Taglit trip and you're still eligible to go, don't wait, just go. It's totally worth it. For those of you who maybe missed their chance but know someone who went (I know you know at least one person, ME!), help me make something incredible possible for others, too.
Israel matters to me...Jewish life matters to me...even if you and I aren't really good friends and you barely know me, make a charitable contribution in honor of my 30th birthday. Any amount will do. I'm really broke (I work for a non-profit, so I'm obviously not in this line of work for the money), and I need your help to make a positive impact on someone else's life.
Don't want to give, or can't? That's cool. I get it. But at least share this with others! It's one simple thing, quick and painless, that could have a tremendous impact! Go on, DONATE, SHARE, CHANGE THE WORLD one small step and one little dollar at a time. I DARE YOU!
And if you're really inspired by this cool online tool, host your own charitable event online for something that's important to you. I'll give as much as I can, or at least help you spread the word. I promise!
IMPORTANT: IF YOU ARE TEMPTED TO JUST SEND MONEY DIRECTLY TO TAGLIT, PLEASE DON'T. IT'S JUST AS IMPORTANT FOR US TO GIVE AS IT IS FOR US TO STAND TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY, AND SHOW THAT WE CARE ABOUT OUR JEWISH FUTURE AS A GROUP AS MUCH AS WE DO INDIVIDUALLY . I'VE PROMISED TO NOT TAKE ONE CENT OUT OF ANY DONATION MADE TO TAGLIT IN HONOR OF MY BIRTHDAY FOR ANYTHING ELSE. EVERY PENNY DONATED FOR THIS SPECIFIC PROJECT WILL BE PROCESSED BY THE JFB OFFICE AND A CHECK WILL BE ISSUED FOR THE FULL AMOUNT TO TAGLIT IN MARCH.
