THE STORY:

Hi Everyone!

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page!  I am running the San Diego Holiday Half Marathon on December 28, 2014.  I am by no means a runner, but I thought I'd run for a cause and supporting Northwest Sarcoma Foundation is very important to me and close to my heart!  Why am I running?

  • My husband is a Ewing's sarcoma survivor.  I never would have known true love, marriage or the future of having a family if I'd never met Justin.  He battled sarcoma in 2004-2005, we met in 2009 and married July 2014.  I am truly grateful for everyone who was around him at the time, especially his medical team.  I believe I am the most fortunate person in the world because 10 years ago, doctors operated, family and friends prayed and Justin was the most stubborn he's ever been while fighting this fight.  I run with hopes that in the future, other people can experience my luck and love, as they had the opportunity to meet the love of their life, who may be a sarcoma survivor because of the funding for research we are doing today!
  • A dear friend from college, Kelly, was by her mom's side during her battle for just over a year.  Kelly lost her mom, Julie, to sarcoma in October 2013, about 7 months before her wedding.  Kelly and I reconnected our friendship over raising awareness and funds for research for sarcoma.  I run so mothers can see their children get married.
  • I met Logan, 13, through some volunteer work in Spokane.  He is currently in his second fight with sarcoma and is honestly one of the toughest kids I know.  No matter what, he is always smiling and doing his best to live his teenage years to the fullest.  I run so kids like Logan can have a carefree, teenage life- free of pain, hospital visits and uncertainty.
  • I run for all the fighters, survivors, those who have moved on in peace, and for all the family and loved ones by their side.

I chose Northwest Sarcoma Foundation as the beneficiary of my project because they provide financial assistance to sarcoma patients undergoing treatment and they invest in sarcoma research, while providing a supportive community for all who have been affected by sarcoma--including survivors like my husband.

I understand in today's world of social media and craziness in general, everyone you see is raising funds for a worthy cause.  If anything, I ask you to please check out: www.nwsarcoma.org and help create awareness about sarcoma.  It is a much lesser known cancer and therefore, not as well-funded.

THANK YOU for your honoring Justin and me with your gift to Northwest Sarcoma Foundation, your support and being a part of this journey!

What is sarcoma?

According to www.wedbmd.com:

A sarcoma is a rare kind of cancer. Sarcomas are different from the much more common carcinomas because they happen in a different kind of tissue. Sarcomas grow in connective tissue -- cells that connect or support other kinds of tissue in your body. These tumors are most common in the bones, muscles, tendons, cartilage, nerves, fat, and blood vessels of your arms and legs, but they can happen anywhere.

Although there are more than 50 types of sarcoma, they can be grouped into two main kinds: soft tissue sarcoma and bone sarcoma, or osteosarcoma. About 1 out of 100 cases of adult cancers is soft tissue sarcoma. Osteosarcomas are even rarer.

Sarcomas can be treated, often by having surgery to remove the tumor.

About Northwest Sarcoma Foundation:

Mission: We provide hope, education, and support to sarcoma patients and their families in the Pacific Northwest, while investing in research to improve cure rates for sarcomas.
