January 11, 2017
Several Tampa Food Not Bombs members were arrested on January 7th, 2017 at Lykes Gaslight Park in downtown Tampa while holding their regular Saturday food share in defiance of an unjust city ordinance that criminalizes compassion and kindness.
Tampa Police Department (TPD) and the city of Tampa have a history of arresting and harassing Food Not Bombs as its members refuse to comply with homeless hate laws that seek to disappear those suffering in our community in the interest of protecting businesses and corporations from losing tourist dollars.
We intend to continue to hold our twice weekly food shares without interruption as people's lives and well being rest upon being able to get a meal. We intend to expose the city's cruelty and inaction in the face of thousands in our community who are struggling with issues of food insecurity, mental and medical health issues on the streets, poverty and homelessness.
If the city will not address these problems, the least they can do is not get in the way and stop others through the use of violence from addressing these needs.
Funds raised will go towards bail/legal aid for those arrested.
Mutual aid and solidarity!
