EVENT DATE: Sep 21, 2013
The Bruce Family is an active duty family serving the U.S. Navy for 10 years with five children. Madelyn Marie, their only child with Down's, beat the odds from the womb and entered the world one month early in order to have immediate open-heart surgery due to a hole in her heart. She fought off ascites (fluid in the body cavity and lungs), Hirschsprung's disease (in the colon) leaving her with a colostomy bag attached to her stomach for eliminations, and Failure to Thrive (absorption of calories by mouth) which meant a g-tube button was connected to her belly button area for direct feeding from an IV bag filled with formula.
She has endured monthly to weekly doctor visits for three years, a multitude of pokes and prods, a bacteria infection and sepsis caused by a prolonged hospital stay, two blood transfusions, three surgeries, rotating nurses and machines (plus oxygen tanks) in her room (not too mention that pesky nasal cannula she never liked). Maddy succumbed to Pneumonia and RSV in 2009. At the age of 3, she had just mastered rolling over, was saying the words "Dada," and had her whole family in love with her 9-month-old spirit. Her constant smile would never allow anyone to feel down about her story, and neither should you. She was a miracle, she was a blessing and testament of God's protection, she was a fighter, and she was our joy.
She was our beautiful, Madelyn Marie Bruce.
