On July 1, 2015, A Safe Place and Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) merged to become HAVEN. Our mission is to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking, and to support and empower women, men, youth, and families to heal from abuse and rebuild their lives.
Financial abuse is one reason why many survivors stay with their abusive partner. Survivors often tell us that they couldn't leave the unhealthy relationship they were in because they didn't have the funds to leave.
At HAVEN, our advocates work directly with survivors to provide financial literacy skills including budgeting, short term and long term financial goals, and creating savings. The ultimate goal is for each survivor to achieve financial stability.
One of our clients shared this with us:
I was left with bruises as I ran from a domestic violence situation. I left my home for a new beginning. I was in a horrific situation that no person should ever experience - let alone with a little girl.
I learned so much from the staff working with me on the importance of being finically stable. I had NO financial knowledge prior to going to HAVEN, honestly I had a love/hate relationship with money! As a single mother of a little girl, I am proud to say that I continue to use the skills that I learned and have checking and saving accounts and live on a budget. Because of what I learned at HAVEN, I have so much faith that I am going to be okay. I am so driven to be a success and not rely on anyone for my financial needs. I am no longer afraid.
Please support us in helping others just like this client who have nowhere else to turn.
