HAVEN's mission is to prevent sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking, and to support and empower women, men, youth, and families to heal from abuse and rebuild their lives.
For so many victims of absue, financial dependence is a barrier to leaving their abusive partner. In fact, control over the household finances is used as a means of keeping victims off balance. It doesn't have to be this way.
At HAVEN, our advocates and educators provide financial literacy skills including budgeting, planning for short and long term goals, and putting funds aside in case of emergency. The ultimate goal is financial stability.
One of our clients shared this with us:
I was left with bruises as I ran from a domestic violence situation. I left my home for a new beginning. I was in a horrific situation that no person should ever experience - let alone with a little girl.
I learned so much from the staff working with me on the importance of being finically stable. I had NO financial knowledge prior to going to HAVEN, honestly I had a love/hate relationship with money! As a single mother of a little girl, I am proud to say that I continue to use the skills that I learned and have checking and saving accounts and live on a budget. Because of what I learned at HAVEN, I have so much faith that I am going to be okay. I am so driven to be a success and not rely on anyone for my financial needs. I am no longer afraid.
The Purple Purse fundraising is helping Haven to reach more clients like this one, giving them a place to turn not just for safety, but for independence. Your support really helps.
