Tate Running Kenyan Athlete Development Fund
Organized by: Travis Tate
This fundraiser seeks to raise money for two extraordinary athletes that come to us from Kenya: Isaac Kitur and Japheth Kiptanui. Isaac and Japheth are two of three elite Kenyan runners coached by Travis Tate, founder of Tate Running. These talented and dedicated young men train incredibly hard, with very few resources and support; for more than two years, Travis has been coaching them gratis and helping them obtain shoes for training. They all hope to compete in the US; their performances at major races will help them establish their careers and support their families.
Japheth plans to represent Tate Running and the Northport Running Club in a marathon in Kenya this summer, and he hopes to make the club proud.
At this time, Isaac is the only one of the three athletes to have a visa to travel to the US. Travis, along with friend and fellow coach Kat Hankinson, are doing everything they can to arrange for him to come here before his visa expires. We hope he will be able to kick off his stay by running the Shelter Island 10k and going head-to-head with 2014 Boston Marathon champ Meb Keflezighi before moving on to other high profile races around the country. We need your help to make this happen!
This chance to race in the US means everything to Isaac. When he graduated from high school, his dream of going to college seemed about to come true when he obtained an athletic scholarship to a university in India. However, he could not obtain a visa, even after trying three times, and he had to give up his dream. Jobs are nigh impossible to find where he lives, and Isaac’s best hope for his future and the well-being of his family is his incredible running talent. He trains every day with this in mind.
Isaac needs a host family to take him in as a guest while he is here. Coaches Travis and Kat are working with the Northport Running Club to help make that happen.
If you can help support Isaac, you will be making a life-changing difference to a deserving and talented athlete. Isaac will remain for a few months to run all the key races that can be arranged, but he will be traveling to those events, so we are seeking to raise funds to help with those travel expenses.
So please help in any way you can -- whether you can host, donate, or simply spread the word!
