BENEFITING: America Needs You
My name is Tavia and I am a rising junior at Cornell University, Ithaca, NY. I am studying Industrial and Labor Relations with a concentration in Accounting and a minor in Business, and will graduate in Spring 2018. As a first-generation college student, I needed support and guidance to help me prepare for a career. America Needs You and the Fellows Program provides me with the training I need to be successful. From the Transfer Workshops, which I am most thankful for, I learned how to write specific responses for my college essays—a lesson that has proven to be quite helpful in my admissions to Cornell University. I have also utilized lessons learned from the Fellows Program in my workplace and at school; one of which is delivering an effective public speech and presentation through storytelling. My Mentor Coach has helped me improve my interviewing and time management skills. Our mock interviews allowed me to practice giving confident responses. As such, I became prepared for real-life interviews, a few of which I have received positive feedback from. I currently volunteer with the City of Orange Township as a Tax Intern, and will later start my summer internship as a Human Resource Intern within their Human Resource Department. As a tax intern, I help with property tax appraisals and proper guidelines adherence. I hope to expand my skills as a Human Resource Intern from resolving workplace conflicts to understanding the hiring process. Without America Needs You and the Fellows Program, I would have never had this opportunity. I am excited about what the future holds for me and am grateful you are supporting my professional journey.
