Taylor's Service Trip to Cusco, Peru!
Organized by: Taylor McClain
EVENT DATE Jan 10, 2015
I will be serving with 12 friends and MEDLIFE, an organization with the goal of "help[ing] families achieve greater freedom from the constraints of poverty, [and] empowering them to live healthier lives." Further, they "aim to achieve this goal through partnering with motivated individuals in poor communities working to improve their access to MEDs: Medicine, Education and community Development. MEDLIFE believes access to quality healthcare is a basic human right. To this end, we commit our time, resources, knowledge and hope to bring Medicine, Education and Development to Low Income Families Everywhere."
The population of Cusco, Peru is largely indigenous, and many of the surrounding communities suffer from the constraints of extreme poverty. In the rural mountainside pueblos, paved roads are uncommon, schools may have only basic teaching supplies, and the nearest hospital may be up to two hours away by car. The local economy relies heavily on agriculture, but earthquakes and heavy rains produce even further hardships. In January of 2010, heavy flooding wiped out roads, utility grids and other structures. Additionally, medical clinics (such as the ones where we will be working) were destroyed.
I am proud to be a part of an organization at Virginia Tech that takes service to others so seriously. We have absolutely loved serving within the New River Valley, but we feel like this winter will be a great time to expand our horizons to serve internationally. There is so much need in Cusco, and I cannot wait for this service learning experience. The total cost for me to serve in Cusco for one week will be about $1,700 (including airfare). As a group, we are already engaged in many fundraising efforts. If you would like to make a donation to my personal trip cost or share this page with friends/family, I would greatly appreciate it! I would be so incredibly grateful for your support!
