About Roller Derby:
Roller Derby may conjure up images of throwing elbows and mayhem on roller skates for some people who remember the old derby they used to watch on TV way back when. But for actual skaters and league members, it means merging of strength, empowerment, fitness, fun, community, acceptance, and determination into a force for good. What began as a revival hobby in the early 2000’s has grown in to culture, a female dominated industry and fully-fledged sport competing for acceptance at the Olympic games. The WFTDA (Women's Flat Track Derby Association) boasts over 400 member leagues around the world, and the 2018 Roller Derby World Cup will host teams from over 35 different countries. There are even more non-member leagues, and leagues that play under other rulesets. It's been said that people find roller derby when they needed it most, and once found, it will always be a part of them.
Twin City Derby Girls:
Twin City Derby Girls (TCDG) was started in 2010 by Delta Badhand, Ghirley Manson, Towanda Steele, Rice-a-Horni, and Bear Kylls to bring the sport of competitive roller derby to Champaign-Urbana and the surrounding area. They aimed to provide a fun and empowering environment that promoted athleticism while also striving to make an impact amongst smaller charities in Champaign-Urbana. From those original five skaters, the TCDG family grew to over 100 members in 2012, supporting a nationally ranked travel team that narrowly missed competing at Division 2 playoffs in 2016, three home teams, and a recreational league. Additionally, thousands of dollars have been raised during roller derby games and many volunteer hours have been given back to local charities over the last seven years by our membership.
The Current Outlook:
After several years of providing leadership and hard work, Delta and other founders eventually decided that they were ready for the next chapter in their life and retired from roller derby. Inevitably, in the roller derby lifecycle, members who have been skating, volunteering, and working in leadership roles will eventually hang up their skates and move on for various reasons, and new members come in to begin a new generation and keep the league growing. Within the last year, TCDG has seen a larger turnover of long-time skaters hanging up their skates after 6+ years of hard work. This means that we, as a united league, are stepping up to chart a new course and save our beloved organization. We are really excited for the future and to share the plans that we have with you! Since roller derby is all volunteer based, almost all of our expenses are out of pocket.
We do have a few local businesses and individuals that financially sponsor our league, but right now it’s just not enough. Normally our monthly membership dues help cover operational expenses, but membership numbers are a bit down right now. If your family or business is interested in sponsorship opportunities with Twin City Derby Girls, please contact us here: firstname.lastname@example.org
How You Can Help:
The TCDG family calls the McKinley Fitness Center home, at 500 W. Church St. in Champaign. In order to sustain roller derby in Champaign-Urbana, we feel that McKinley is essential as it provides a dedicated space for practices and an event venue all in one central location. Due to the changes in leadership and members, we need to raise money to cover three months’ worth of operating expenses (about $4,000 per month) to allow the league to focus on a revised and vibrant business plan, creating thrilling events (such as a home team season in the fall) and planning community activities for 2017 and beyond! If we are unable to raise the necessary funds, we will be forced to close our doors and be unable to continue providing roller derby in the community.
Please send us an email if you'd prefer to donate directly to TCDG in a different method than through this site.
Twin City Derby Girls is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Donors will be mailed receipts upon request, as donations may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
