An estimated one in five homeless youth is LGBT. Some flee intolerant households while others escape abusive living situations. More than a quarter is told to leave by parents who will not accept their child as he or she is. Once on the streets, LGBT homeless youth are seven times more likely than non-LGBT homeless youth to experience violence.
The San Diego LGBT Center's Sunburst Youth Housing Project provides housing and services for LGBT and HIV+ youth ages 18 to 24. Since 2006, The YHP has provided a secure and supportive environment. YHP is successfully empowering youth, teaching them how to stand on their own and helping them create happy, healthy futures.
