Teach me to Fish

Jesus once said, "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime."

Asking you to help me with a bill would be asking you for the fish. Asking for your help to create a solid, sustainable business is asking you to teach me how to fish. Once i am able to fish for myself I will be able to take care of my own bills.

To that end i will share with you why I want to create, promote and grow a Comic Book Store and TCG & RPG Hall.

I have 3 passions: Reading, Art, and Learning. When I was a kid I hated reading. Then, in middle school, I was assigned a book to read and it changed everything! That book was "A Bridge to Tarabithia." It was the first time I related to a character. I was drawn into the story. I felt the emotions of the main character as if they were my own. And I cried at the end. It was so powerful that I could not stop reading. I found myself looking for more books to read. More stories to connect with and even to learn from. I have read hundreds of books since then.

When I was in college I found myself drawn to the local comic book store. I loved the artwork on the pages. The skill and dedication it takes to constantly recreate a character from many different angles while maintaining its integrity and appearance. The captivating story lines surrounding heroes and villains alike. They intrigued me and I began my journey into the world of comics. I have read thousands of comics to date. I have also learned that, in the State of New York, comic books have been successfully used in schools to encourage kids to start reading. That is something I want to be able to do for kids here in Kingman.

There is also a massive TCG (Trading Card Game) gaming community here in Kingman. They have been bouncing between the library and various restaurants in the area to meet and play their games. However, due to time restrictions at these locations, they cannot hold any tournaments. They would love to have one location to be able to meet on a daily basis and finally hold tournaments. There are also several groups who enjoy RPGs (Role Playing Games) such as Dungeons and Dragons, GURPs, Vampire the Masquerade and many others. I want to provide them with the space to enjoy these games. I will also offer snacks and refreshments.

While I am very passionate I am also business minded. This is no whim. I have done my due diligence. I know the population and demographics for Kingman and the surrounding area. I know the demographics for the target markets of the comic book, RPG and TCG industries. And, based on industry data, there is more than a sufficient customer base in Kingman and the surrounding area to support a comic book store. I have laid out a business plan for starting and growing this business over the next 5 years. The plan will be reviewed and adjusted annually based on actual performance. The first 3 years are key and all revenues will be reinvested in the business during this time. Why? Because the majority of new businesses fail within the first 3 years. It is important nurture the business during this time. Once we hit the 5 year mark, the historic mark of business stability, we will start engaging in community outreach programs such as the one I mentioned earlier in New York.

So the question becomes this: How many of you will follow the lead of a great teacher and teach me how to fish so I can in turn teach others?
