THE STORY:

It's been said many different ways that some of our greatest opportunities come through our greatest trials and challenges, and that has certainly been the case for our family in 2017.

260 is now a special number for me. It is the number of days from the day I was diagnosed with an especially rare, aggressive and dangerous form of AML Leukemia to September 30th, 2017. Being an avid 'weekend warrior' amateur cyclist, 9.30.17 is a major milestone - it could be my first ride outdoors on a bike following my stem cell transplant to cure the Leukemia.

I recently learned that when I went to the emergency room on Friday the 13th (January this year) and arrived in my incredible doctor's care (Dr. Bhushan) the following afternoon for the diagnosis, I would have been dead within 72 hours without intervention. Dr. Vikas Bhushan, Dr. John Matthews, and my PA-C Katie Sellers are now cautiously optimistic that I may be able to ride in the Emmitt Smith Gran Fondo next month - a new fundraiser supporting the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities.

In 2016, my cycling friend Ray and I rode in the annual classic - the "Hotter 'N Hell Hundred" - a grueling 100 mile bike race in Wichita Falls, Texas held at the end of August every year. This ride is a right of passage for many cyclists around the world, and they attract > 10,000 riders each year. Since we were already in shape and Ray heard about Emmitt's inaugural charity ride 3 weeks later, we decided to join in. We had a fantastic ride, and when we rode past Emmitt around mile 12, I yelled out, "Hey Emmitt, How far are you riding today?" Emmitt responded with a friendly smile, "Man, I don't know!" I found out Wednesday that he rode the 45 mile route - impressive with all of his hosting duties at the event.

Pat & Emmitt Smith have both benefited from strong mentors and support throughout their lives, and are passionate about doing the same to help others in the Dallas community. Their charity funds many non-profit organizations like the Children's Medical Center - which we've personally leveraged for emergency medical services for 3 of our children already (and hopefully not needed for the other 2.)

Through a series of pretty incredible connections over the last month, and with the help of some close friends, Julie pulled off a birthday present for me this year that trumps all the birthday presents we've done for each other put together!

Julie was talking to her friend Shauna to help think of a 'cool present for a cyclist', and when Shauna searched for a random bike shop in the area, the first one she called was Plano Cycling and Fitness, which happened to be the local shop working with Emmitt Smith and his retired Pro cyclist friend Geoff on the new Emmitt Smith charity ride. While Shauna was on the phone with Sherman Franklin at the bike shop front desk, Geoff walked in the door and overheard the conversation. A few minutes later, we were invited as honored guests to the kickoff dinner for the 2nd annual Emmitt Smith Gran Fondo.

I've always thought that there was a silver lining to every cloud. Now I'm realizing that the silver lining can be blinding if we take the time to slow down and really look at it.
