BENEFITING: ACTS 4YOUTH INCORPORATED
EVENT: River Valley Run 2016
EVENT DATE: Aug 13, 2016
At-risk kids in Baltimore City suffer many hardships and trauma, such as having a sibling or parent die
from gun violence, a relative in prison, overcrowded classrooms with many discipline issues, poverty, and lack of hope and positive role models.
To help at-risk kids, I am raising money for Acts4Youth by running in the River Valley Ranch Run on August 13 th . Please read the rest of this email to learn more about the work Acts4Youth is doing and consider supporting me in this run.
Acts4Youth’s program works to build relationships with at-risk kids and through these relationships nurture their personal, social, and spiritual development.
Please meet Damien. He is a rising 8 th grader who joined the Acts4Youth program in 5 th grade.
When he started the program, it was clear that he had leadership qualities. Unfortunately, he used these skills to cause disruption during lessons and encourage other kids to join him.
The Acts4Youth leaders consistently pulled Damien out of the group activities, talked with him, listened to him, and worked with him with to complete a worksheet identifying the emotions he is feeling and the underlying reasons why he is causing a commotion. Inner city boys are often discouraged from considering their emotions and told to “act like a man,” so Acts4Youth uses a variety of techniques to help them work through their emotions and express them appropriately.
After three years, Damien still likes to play the class clown occasionally, but when he does, he owns up to it, apologizes and self-corrects. During his last year of middle school and through high school, Acts4Youth’s leaders will continue to work with him to help him grow in resilience and faith and use his gift of leadership in constructive, positive ways that can help him thrive as an adult.
Helping kids identify their emotions, take responsibility and show self-control and consideration is not a quick process. For them to internalize these “missing pieces to adulthood” and make them true habits takes consistency, relationships, and time.
I want to help more inner-city kids like Damien be restored to wholeness and thriving within their communities. This is why I am raising funds for Acts4Youth through my participation in the River Valley Run on August 13.
Please support me.
