Thank you for helping me realize goals are not limits
April 18, 2017

It has been 27 years since I last ran the Boston Marathon and I had a goal in mind of breaking my 1990 time of 3:38. My training logs and stats  See more

THE STORY:

My wife, Kathy and I have been involved with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention for several years and have guided friends and co-workers to them in the past.

Recently I was made aware of some startling facts about Occupational Fatalities and the relationship to suicide.  According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, suicide (11) was the leading cause of workplace fatalities in 2013 followed by falls (10) as the second leading cause.   As a Safety Professional this reality has taken me by surprise and I am now coordinating an effort to help raise awareness of this connection in the workplace.   I don’t know why I was surprised about the relationship between working conditions and suicide and I do understand it is a complicated relationship.

I was eight years old, in elementary school sitting at the dinner table and asking my dad “why would he kill himself?” and I was met with an uneasy silence and then an unsure answer. I would ask this question two more times before I graduated High School after two of my friend’s dads, who were about the age I am now, took their own lives and at least one of these was directly related to the work he did. Memories are a funny thing and they came back to me after my daughter asked me “Why would she kill herself?” referring to a dear friends daughter and I met her with an uneasy silence but unlike my dad, I had a resource I could go to that would help me.

You are not alone. Help is available for recognizing signs and signals. And assistance and resources are available to help survivors to cope with suicide. I have been running since I was 12 year's old and this will be my second time fundraising for a specific event, the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 17th. Please help me reach my fundraising goal for AFSP so others won’t have to feel helpless about suicide by clicking the attached link
