On June 3rd, in Kensington, Maryland, we will participate in and volunteer for the fourth annual Colleen’s BA 5K. Colleen’s BA 5K was organized in memory of Colleen Mitchel—the daughter of a dear friend of mine and, like Anna, was born with biliary atresia (BA). Unfortunately, Colleen died in 2013 at the age of 19 due to complications from liver disease, while awaiting a second liver transplant.
While Anna and Colleen sadly shared the same horrible disease, they also shared the same wonderful doctors at the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Liver Center. Without the amazing team at Johns Hopkins and the generosity of organ donors, Anna would not have been able to have not one, not two, but three liver transplants before the ripe old age of 7! We are happy to report that Anna’s health has been relatively stable since her last transplant in 2005 and Anna, being Anna, takes everything in stride and enjoys life like any other 18 year old girl about to head off to college in the fall.
Every year for the past four years, Colleen’s family has organized Colleen’s BA 5K in an effort to discover the cause of biliary atresia, support other families whose children suffer from liver disease and raise awareness of the need for organ donation. We are proud to be a part of this event and am excited by our efforts to ramp up the fundraising this year! We have set a family fundraising goal of $2,500.
This is where you come in. If you are able to help us meet our goal to support these causes that are so near and dear to our hearts, go to our personal fundraising site and make your donation TODAY! No amount is too small. Your gift will be 100% tax deductible, and you will receive a receipt from the Community Foundation tor the National Capital Region (CFNCR)*.
Thank you for your support of our efforts. Susan, David, Ethan, Jonah and Anna
